Highlights

Overview

Situated in the mid-southern part of Nepal, Chitwan National Park is a gem of biodiversity, attracting nature lovers and adventure seekers from around the world. Covering an expansive area of 932 square kilometers, this UNESCO World Heritage site represents the rich subtropical Terai region of Nepal. The park offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a pristine environment where lush forests, grasslands, and riverine habitats merge to create a haven for wildlife. One of the most thrilling ways to explore this wilderness is through a jungle safari, either on the back of a docile elephant or via a Jeep safari, allowing visitors to witness the park’s incredible inhabitants up close.

Chitwan is famously home to the endangered One-Horned Rhinoceros and the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger, making wildlife sightings here especially exciting. Apart from these iconic species, the park shelters an impressive variety of animals, including langur monkeys, wild boars, bears, wild cats, water dolphins, and crocodiles. Bird watchers will be equally delighted, as the park boasts over 525 bird species, along with 55 amphibians and reptiles and 50 species of mammals. The nearby town of Sauraha serves as the gateway to the park and offers a range of lodges, hotels, and guesthouses that reflect the area's popularity. Beyond wildlife, guests have the opportunity to attend traditional Tharu cultural programs and visit local Tharu villages, providing a rich cultural experience alongside the natural wonders.

Best Time for Chitwan Jungle Safari

The best time to visit Chitwan National Park for a jungle safari is from October to March, when the weather is cooler and drier. During these months, the lush greenery of the park is still intact following the monsoon season, making it an ideal time for wildlife spotting as animals come out in search of water and food. The mornings and evenings are particularly magical, as animals are more active during these cooler parts of the day.

The summer months (April to June) can be quite hot and humid, making safari excursions a bit uncomfortable. However, this period can still be rewarding as it coincides with the mating season of some animals and the presence of migratory birds. The monsoon season (July to September), while less ideal due to heavy rains, transforms the park into a vibrant and lush environment. The rains also replenish water sources, attracting different wildlife to the park’s rivers and wetlands.
