Overview

The Ruby Valley Trek, organized by Rediscover Nepal Treks & Tours, is one of Nepal’s best-kept secrets. Nestled in the lap of the majestic Ganesh Himal range, this 12-day journey unveils an untouched trekking route rich in cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and a raw Himalayan experience. The trek derives its name from the hidden deposits of ruby gems in the region, adding a hint of mystique to the natural beauty. This route is perfect for travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience that balances scenic wonder with authentic village life.

Throughout the trek, you’ll traverse through Tamang and Gurung villages, immersing yourself in centuries-old traditions and a lifestyle that is deeply intertwined with nature. Rediscover Nepal’s carefully curated itinerary ensures a perfect blend of adventure and cultural interaction. What makes this trek truly unique is its homestay experience in remote villages that lack commercial tea houses. Staying with local families not only enriches your travel but also supports sustainable tourism in Nepal. The journey from the terraced farmlands to the high mountain passes like Pangsang Bhanjyang (3,850m) offers varied terrain and breathtaking views, making the Ruby Valley Trek one of the most diverse and rewarding treks in Nepal.

The Ruby Valley Trail

The trail begins with your arrival in Kathmandu and a drive to Syabrubesi, a small but scenic village at the foothills of the Himalayas. From here, your trekking journey begins. The trail gradually ascends through lush forests and ancient settlements, reaching Gatlang, a traditional Tamang village with intricate stone houses and warm hospitality. Continuing on to Somdang, you begin to feel the shift in altitude and environment. Somdang serves as your acclimatization stop, allowing your body to adapt while offering views of the surrounding mountains.

The trek then leads to Pangsang Bhanjyang Pass (3,850m), a highlight of the journey. This panoramic viewpoint offers jaw-dropping vistas of Langtang, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, and even distant peaks of the Annapurna range. Descending through rhododendron forests and wide meadows, you’ll reach Tipling and Shertung, villages known for their lively culture and nearby natural hot springs—a soothing treat after days of trekking. The final part of the trail winds through Chalish Gaon, Jharlang, and Darkha Gaun, showcasing picturesque terraced hills and tranquil countryside, before heading back to Kathmandu.

Best Time for Ruby Valley Trek

The best seasons for the Ruby Valley Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these times, the weather is generally stable with clear skies, offering ideal trekking conditions and the best mountain views. Spring is especially scenic, with blooming rhododendron forests and wildflowers adding vibrant colors to the landscape. Autumn, following the monsoon, reveals lush green hills and crisp mountain air, making it a favorite season for photography and scenic appreciation.

While winter (December to February) is also possible, the higher altitude areas like Pangsang Pass may be covered in snow, making some sections challenging or impassable. Monsoon season (June to August) is not recommended due to slippery trails and the risk of landslides. However, for those looking to avoid the crowds and enjoy a more secluded experience, early spring or late autumn can be an excellent alternative.

Ruby Valley Trek Difficulty

The Ruby Valley Trek is classified as a moderate trek. It does not require technical climbing or high-altitude experience, making it suitable for both seasoned trekkers and fit beginners. The trek covers a variety of terrain—from gradual ascents to steep descents and high mountain passes like Pangsang Bhanjyang. The daily trekking duration ranges from 5 to 8 hours, so a good level of physical fitness is necessary.

While most of the trek follows well-established trails, some sections may be rugged or remote, especially where guesthouses are limited. The homestay nature of the trek adds to the adventure but requires flexibility and an open mind. Acclimatization is properly managed by Rediscover Nepal Treks & Tours, and the team ensures that safety and comfort are prioritized throughout the journey.

Food and Accommodation for Ruby Valley Trek

One of the highlights of the Ruby Valley Trek is its homestay accommodation. In many of the remote villages like Somdang, Tipling, Shertung, and Chalish, commercial guesthouses are limited or nonexistent. Rediscover Nepal Treks & Tours arranges comfortable stays with local families, giving trekkers a unique opportunity to connect with the culture, traditions, and daily lives of the villagers.

Meals during the trek typically consist of traditional Nepali food, including dal bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables), noodles, soups, and occasionally local delicacies like buckwheat pancakes or homemade yogurt. The food is mostly organic and sourced from local farms. While the menu may be simpler than in more commercial trekking areas, the warm hospitality and authentic experience more than compensate for it.

Why Choose Ruby Valley Trek

If you're seeking a trek that combines adventure, culture, nature, and social impact, then the Ruby Valley Trek is for you. Unlike the more commercialized routes like Everest or Annapurna, Ruby Valley remains relatively unexplored, offering a tranquil trekking experience with minimal crowds. Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu (1,350m) and Transfer to Hotel

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a warm welcome awaits you from our team at Rediscover Nepal Treks & Tours. As you exit the terminal, our representative will greet you with a traditional garland and assist you with the transfer to your hotel. Kathmandu, the bustling capital of Nepal, offers a unique blend of ancient culture, vibrant streets, and historic architecture. After checking in, you’ll have the remainder of the day to relax and recover from your journey. For those with energy, a short stroll through Thamel—a lively neighborhood filled with shops, cafes, and local art—is a great way to soak in the local vibe. In the evening, you’ll attend a pre-trek briefing where our team will explain the trekking itinerary, safety protocols, and equipment checklist. This is also an opportunity to meet your guide and fellow trekkers. Enjoy a traditional welcome dinner at a local Nepali restaurant to kick off your adventure.

Day 2 : Drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (1,460m) – Duration: 6-7 hours

After an early breakfast at the hotel, we begin our journey with a scenic drive north from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, the starting point of the Ruby Valley Trek. The road winds through picturesque hills, terraced fields, and charming villages, with stunning views of the Langtang Himalayas in the distance. As we exit the bustling Kathmandu Valley, the landscape becomes increasingly serene, dotted with pine forests and winding rivers. The drive typically takes 6 to 7 hours, depending on road conditions, with occasional stops for tea and refreshments. Syabrubesi is a small but vibrant town nestled along the banks of the Bhote Koshi River. Once we arrive, we’ll check into a local teahouse and have time to explore the area or rest after the long drive. The cool mountain air and views of surrounding hills set the tone for the days of adventure ahead. Your guide will also provide a short briefing about the next day’s trek.

Day 3 : Trek from Syabrubesi to Gatlang (2,240m) – Duration: 5-6 hours

Today marks the beginning of our trekking journey into the heart of the Ruby Valley. After breakfast, we start the ascent from Syabrubesi, crossing a suspension bridge and gradually climbing through dense forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron. The trail offers panoramic views of Ganesh Himal, Langtang Lirung, and other snow-capped peaks. After several hours of steady hiking, we reach the beautiful Tamang village of Gatlang, perched on a hillside and known for its stone houses and vibrant cultural traditions. Gatlang is one of the culturally rich villages in the region, offering an immersive experience of Tamang heritage. You’ll notice traditional dress, ancient monasteries, and warm hospitality from the locals. The community is known for its weaving and woodcraft, and you may have a chance to interact with locals or visit a nearby chorten (stupa). We stay overnight in a local teahouse, enjoying a hearty meal and perhaps a local cultural dance performance in the evening.

Day 4 : Trek from Gatlang to Somdang (3,271m) – Duration: 5-6 hours

Leaving Gatlang behind, we continue our trek towards Somdang, a remote settlement surrounded by alpine forests and majestic peaks. The trail ascends gradually, with a noticeable change in vegetation as we gain altitude. We pass through pine forests, grassy meadows, and small streams, often spotting Himalayan birds and wildflowers along the route. The hike is moderately challenging but deeply rewarding, offering uninterrupted views of Ganesh Himal and Langtang ranges. After a steady climb, we reach the old mining town of Somdang, once active in zinc and copper mining. Though the mines are no longer operational, the area retains a rugged charm. Somdang lies in a quiet valley surrounded by dramatic landscapes, making it an excellent spot for photography and reflection. The cool, crisp air and peaceful ambiance here are perfect for rest. We stay overnight in a basic but welcoming lodge, preparing for an important acclimatization day ahead.

Day 5 : Acclimatization Day at Somdang

Today is set aside for acclimatization in Somdang, essential for adjusting to the higher altitude and preparing the body for the tougher days ahead. Instead of a full-day hike, we engage in a light walk or short hike around Somdang to aid in acclimatization. One popular option is to trek up the nearby hilltops that offer panoramic views of the Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges. These ridges are ideal spots for meditation, photography, or simply enjoying the untouched beauty of the Himalayas. The slower pace allows time to observe the local flora and fauna, including colorful Himalayan pheasants, eagles, and high-altitude wildflowers. The day also provides an opportunity to rest, recharge, and interact with fellow trekkers. In the afternoon, you can explore the remnants of the mining area or relax with a book. Staying hydrated and maintaining a relaxed pace today will ensure you're well-prepared for the ascent to the Pangsang Pass tomorrow.

Day 6 : Trek from Somdang to Tipling (2,200m) via the Pang Sang Pass (3,850m) - Duration: 7–8 hours

Today is one of the most scenic and challenging days of the trek as we cross the stunning Pangsang Bhanjyang Pass, a high mountain viewpoint that offers some of the best panoramic views in the Ruby Valley region. We begin early from Somdang, trekking steadily uphill through alpine meadows and dense forests. As we ascend, the vegetation thins, giving way to rugged landscapes with scattered rhododendrons and dwarf junipers. After a few hours of climbing, we reach the Pangsang Pass at 3,850 meters. From here, we are rewarded with breathtaking 270-degree views of Ganesh Himal, Langtang Lirung, Manaslu, and even parts of the Annapurna range on clear days. The high winds and thin air remind us of the altitude, so we pause for photos and rest before beginning a long descent. The trail winds down through pine forests and terraced fields until we reach Tipling, a culturally rich Tamang village known for its traditional dances and warm hospitality. Overnight at a local teahouse.

Day 7 : Trek from Tipling to Shertung (1,875m) – Duration: 5–6 hours

After breakfast in Tipling, we begin a moderate trek toward Shertung, another picturesque Tamang village that reflects the harmonious blend of nature and culture in the Ruby Valley region. The day starts with a gentle descent, crossing suspension bridges and walking alongside the Adha Khola (river). As we pass through dense forests and fertile hillsides, you'll notice the shift in terrain to more terraced farmlands and well-inhabited settlements. The trail offers beautiful views of Ganesh Himal and glimpses of village life, including farmers tending their crops, children playing along the paths, and prayer flags fluttering in the breeze. Upon reaching Shertung, we’re welcomed by its tranquil surroundings and traditional lifestyle. The village name means "Place of Gold" in the local language, and it's easy to see why—surrounded by verdant hills and mountain views, the village shines with natural beauty. If time allows, we may visit a nearby monastery or attend a cultural performance arranged by locals. Overnight in Shertung.

Day 8 : Trek from Shertung to Chalish Gaon (1,675m) – Duration: 6–7 hours

Today’s journey takes us from Shertung to Chalish Gaon, a peaceful and culturally vibrant village known for its Gurung and Tamang communities. After a hearty breakfast, we begin a relaxed hike through terraced fields and small clusters of traditional homes. The trail is scenic and relatively easy compared to previous days, with gentle ups and downs through forested hills and open meadows. On the way, we pass small shrines and chortens, reflecting the deeply spiritual life of the locals. Chalish Gaon is one of the most hospitable villages in the Ruby Valley, and the interaction with its people makes the experience deeply personal. You’ll witness authentic rural life—people weaving, grinding grain, or preparing traditional meals. Once in Chalish, we can visit the local school or community center, and your guide from Rediscover Nepal Treks & Tours will likely share stories of the area’s resilience and cultural richness. Overnight in a cozy teahouse or homestay, enjoying home-cooked meals and local hospitality.

Day 9 : Trek from Chalish Gaon to Jharlang (3,000m) – Duration: 5–6 hours

Leaving Chalish Gaon, we ascend toward Jharlang, a more remote and less-traveled part of the Ruby Valley region. This part of the trek offers solitude and sweeping views, especially as we climb higher through pine and rhododendron forests. The path is steeper in parts today, so we take it at a comfortable pace, stopping occasionally to take in views of surrounding hills and villages below. As we ascend toward the 3,000-meter mark, you’ll feel a shift in both climate and vegetation. The journey includes crossing small streams, navigating stone stairways, and stopping at scenic ridgelines. Jharlang is a scenic highland village perched on a ridge with a commanding view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. It’s home to a mix of ethnic groups, and the simplicity of life here is both humbling and inspiring. We settle into a local lodge or homestay, where the remoteness of the village offers a unique sense of tranquility and reflection.

Day 10 : Trek from Jharlang to Darkha Gaun (850m) – Duration: 6–7 hours

Today’s trek takes us on a long descent from the highlands of Jharlang to the lower-altitude village of Darkha Gaun, sitting at just 850 meters. As we lose altitude, the landscapes change dramatically—from alpine conditions to subtropical greenery. The trail passes through terraced farmland, thick forests, and traditional villages that seem untouched by time. Along the way, we may encounter locals going about their daily routines—carrying baskets of produce, herding goats, or weaving mats. The path can be steep and slippery in parts, especially if it's rained, so we proceed carefully. As we near Darkha Gaun, we are greeted with warmer weather and a more fertile environment. This village is one of the last stops on our trek and offers a great opportunity to interact with local communities before returning to urban life. Rediscover Nepal Treks & Tours ensures you get the most authentic cultural experience, and a farewell dinner with local delicacies awaits in the evening.

Day 11 : Trek from Darkha Gaun to Dhading Besi & Drive Back to Kathmandu – Duration: 8–9 hours

Our final day on the trail begins with a short morning trek from Darkha Gaun to Darkha Phedi, from where we begin our drive back to Kathmandu via Dhading Besi, the district headquarters. The descent to the road takes around an hour or two and offers a last look at the scenic hills and terraced farms. Upon reaching the jeep pickup point, we board a private 4x4 vehicle for the bumpy but memorable ride through the countryside. The road winds along the ridges, offering more views of the Trishuli River and distant mountain ranges. After reaching Dhading Besi, we switch to a more comfortable vehicle for the smoother highway ride back to Kathmandu. After an 8–9 hour journey, we arrive at your hotel where a hot shower, soft bed, and urban comforts await. In the evening, Rediscover Nepal Treks & Tours hosts a farewell dinner, celebrating the completion of your incredible Ruby Valley adventure.
