Overview

Many travelers call Pikey Peak the best viewpoint to see Mount Everest, and for good reason. The 9-day trek organized by Rediscover Nepal Treks & Tours takes you deep into the Solu region, an area known for its pristine natural beauty and rich Sherpa culture. This trek offers stunning panoramic views of some of the world’s highest and most iconic peaks, including Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu, and Mt. Kanchenjunga. It is famously known that Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to successfully summit Everest, regarded Pikey Peak as his favorite vantage point to admire the majestic Everest. Unlike the crowded Everest Base Camp route, the Pikey Peak trek is a relatively new trail that attracts fewer trekkers, allowing adventurers to experience the tranquility and untouched nature of Nepal’s Himalayas.

The trek winds through dense forests of orchids, pine, and rhododendron trees, revealing terraced hillsides, lush valleys, and spectacular views of snow-capped mountains at every turn. Beyond its breathtaking landscapes, this journey offers a unique cultural experience as you pass through traditional Sherpa villages, observe local lifestyles, and visit beautiful monasteries and stupas along the way. If you trek during the flowering seasons, the hills burst into vibrant colors with blooming orchids, magnolias, and rhododendrons, enhancing the enchanting atmosphere of this less-traveled Himalayan path.

Best Time for Pikey Peak Trek

The best time to explore on the Pikey Peak trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) seasons. During these months, the weather is generally stable with clear skies, which provide excellent visibility of the towering Himalayan peaks. Spring brings the added bonus of blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers, turning the trail into a colorful paradise. The temperatures are moderate during the day, making trekking comfortable, while nights can be cool.

Autumn is considered the peak trekking season for most Himalayan treks, including Pikey Peak. The skies are crisp and clear after the monsoon rains, allowing for uninterrupted views of the mountains. Additionally, the festive seasons in Nepal during autumn offer a wonderful cultural experience. While winter trekking (December to February) is possible, cold temperatures and occasional snowfall can make the route challenging, and some trails may be icy. Summer months (June to August) are generally avoided due to heavy monsoon rains, which can cause slippery trails and landslides.

Pikey Peak Trekking Difficulty

The Pikey Peak trek is considered moderately challenging and is suitable for a wide range of trekkers, from beginners to those with some trekking experience. The highest altitude reached on this trek is Pikey Peak itself, at 4,065 meters (13,330 feet). While altitude sickness is a potential risk, the gradual ascent and well-planned itinerary allow sufficient time for acclimatization.

The trek involves a mix of uphill climbs and flat sections, with some days involving around 5 to 6 hours of walking. The trails are generally well-marked and pass through villages, forests, and alpine meadows. The moderate difficulty level makes this trek accessible for families, solo travelers, and groups looking to enjoy a Himalayan adventure without the extreme physical demands of higher-altitude treks. Rediscover Nepal Treks & Tours ensures safety and comfort by providing experienced guides, porters, and flexible pacing to accommodate individual trekking abilities.

Major Activities for Pikey Peak Trek

The Pikey Peak trek offers a variety of activities that enrich your Himalayan adventure. Besides trekking and soaking in the stunning mountain views, you will have the opportunity to explore traditional Sherpa villages and interact with the friendly locals. Visiting monasteries and stupas along the route provides insights into Buddhist culture and spirituality, adding a meaningful cultural dimension to the trek.

Photography enthusiasts will find this trek rewarding with numerous chances to capture pristine landscapes, wildlife, and vibrant local life. Nature lovers can enjoy bird watching and spotting rare orchids and other Himalayan flora. The trek also includes a memorable hike over the Lamjura La Pass, which offers breathtaking views and a sense of achievement. Trip Itinerary

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be greeted and welcomed by one of our representatives to this beautiful country of Nepal. You will be transferred to the respective hotel for rest and relaxation. In the evening, you can enjoy delicious Nepali cuisine and Nepali cultural shows.

You will be briefed about the necessary gears and equipment we need while trekking. In the evening we will do the necessary shopping. In the morning after breakfast, we head towards popular sites in Kathmandu, which are also listed by UNESCO. Today we visit Basantapur Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath Temple, and Boudhanath.

We drive for 8-9 hours to reach Dhap. The driving route follows the Sunkoshi river until Ghurmi. We enjoy the scenery of landscapes, rivers, and gorges on our way. After driving through various small towns and villages we finally arrive at Dhap Bazaar for our night stay in a lodge.

Today we commence our trek. We walk through a dry trail which leads us to Sigane. Then the trail meets a road which is under construction. We walk for around two-hour to arrive Jhapre. It offers a stunning view of Mount Everest and deep valley. At Jhapre you can interact with local people and experience their way of living.

Today after having our breakfast we hike following a dusty trail, climbing the uphill trail to reach Bhulbhule. We leave Bhulbhule following a steep trail following rhododendron tree forest and small settlements of Lhamuje. From Lhamuje the trail follows a pasture where you can see yaks grazing. We further follow a winding trail that takes us to Pikey Base. Pikey Base offers only a few guesthouses with basic facilities. Unless the weather is not clear, it is suggested to stay in Pikey base rather than visiting Pikey Peak which is just 2 hours from base. Also, it is advised to take enough rest to prevent AMS.

Today is a special day as we ascend Pikey Peak, the destination of our journey. We start early today to witness the magnificent sun glowing in the snow-clad mountains. We will observe the stunning panoramic views of Mt. Everest, Kanchenjunga, Dhawalagiri, Makalu, Thamserku, Langtang, and many more. After spending some time with the wonders of nature and taking some pictures for memory we descend to Junbesi for overnight stay. We will cross Lamjura pass on our way which also showcases the stunning views of the lower Khumbu region.

Today we follow Junabesi river descending towards Benighat, crossing suspension bridges. We further walk through the forest observing the scenic view on our way. We finally arrive at Phaplu. We mark this day the end of our trek. We rest at Phaplu overnight.

We board on a domestic flight at Phaplu that will take us to Kathmandu. The aerial view of snow-clad mountains is something you want to enjoy your 35 minutes flight. You will be dropped to your hotel when we arrive in Kathmandu and you can indulge yourself in a city life after arrival in Kathmandu.

Today is the last day of our 9 day's journey towards Pikey Peak. You will be transferred to TIA for departure towards your homeland. You will be filled with the thrill you’ve experienced and the culture and natural beauty you have witnessed. We bid farewell thus completing this amazing 9 days' journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Pikey Peak Trek is considered a moderate trek and is suitable for beginners as well as experienced trekkers. You do not need prior high-altitude trekking experience, but a good level of fitness and the ability to walk 5–6 hours a day on hilly terrain is recommended. The trail involves gradual ascents and descents, with the highest point being Pikey Peak at 4,065 meters. With the support of our experienced guides and proper acclimatization, most trekkers complete the route comfortably.

The best seasons for the Pikey Peak Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these times, the weather is generally stable with clear skies, offering fantastic mountain views and comfortable trekking conditions. Spring is also the blooming season for rhododendrons and orchids, making the landscape especially colorful. While winter (December to February) offers solitude and crisp views, it can be quite cold, and some trails may have snow or ice. Monsoon season (June to August) is less ideal due to rain and muddy trails.

Accommodation on the trek is in local teahouses or mountain lodges, which are simple but comfortable and provide basic amenities such as beds, blankets, and shared bathrooms. In Kathmandu, you'll stay in a standard hotel. Meals during the trek are included and typically consist of local Nepali food (like dal bhat), noodles, soups, fried rice, and occasionally Western options like pancakes or pasta. We ensure clean, freshly prepared meals to keep you energized throughout your journey.

Although the Pikey Peak Trek reaches over 4,000 meters, the risk of altitude sickness is relatively low compared to higher-altitude treks in the Everest or Annapurna regions. The itinerary has been carefully designed to allow gradual acclimatization. Our guides are trained to monitor your health and recognize symptoms of altitude sickness. Drinking plenty of water, walking at a steady pace, and avoiding alcohol during the trek are key to staying healthy at altitude.

There are two ways to reach the trailhead of the Pikey Peak Trek. You can either take a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dhap, which takes approximately 7–8 hours, or opt for a short flight to Phaplu and begin the trek from there. Our standard itinerary includes a drive to Dhap and a return flight from Phaplu to Kathmandu. However, Rediscover Nepal Treks & Tours offers flexibility, and we can customize the itinerary according to your travel preferences and budget.

You’ll need to pack trekking essentials such as comfortable hiking boots, warm clothing (layers are key), a waterproof jacket, sleeping bag, water purification tablets, headlamp, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a daypack. A detailed packing list will be provided upon booking. Porters will carry the majority of your gear, and you’ll only need to carry a small daypack with your daily necessities. Luggage weight per porter is usually limited, so pack wisely.

Yes, travel insurance is mandatory for all trekkers joining the Pikey Peak Trek. Your insurance should cover high-altitude trekking (up to 4,500 meters), medical emergencies, evacuation by helicopter, and trip cancellations. It’s important to review the policy carefully and ensure it suits the type of activity you’ll be undertaking.

Rediscover Nepal Treks & Tours is a locally operated company with deep knowledge of the region, professional guides, and a strong focus on customer satisfaction and safety. We aim to provide a personalized experience with flexible itineraries, cultural immersion, and reliable logistics. Our team takes care of everything—from permits to accommodations—so you can focus on enjoying the incredible scenery and Sherpa hospitality throughout your journey.
